About Chris Camillo
Chris Camillo is an American investor, author, and entrepreneur. He is the co-founder of the Dumb Money Live community and the founder of TickerTags. He is best known for social arbitrage, an investing style he created that finds opportunities in the real world and on social media before Wall Street reacts. He started investing in 2007 with $20,000 and grew it into more than $2 million in just three years.
An independent audit of his account later showed he averaged over 80% returns a year for seven years. Chris says he has since grown his account to more than $70 million. He was also featured in Jack Schwager's book Unknown Market Wizards, and he wrote his own book, Laughing at Wall Street.
From Garage Sales to Wall Street
Chris was always good at finding value other people missed. As a kid in the 80s and 90s, he would wake up before sunrise and take buses across the city to garage sales, buying mispriced items cheap and reselling them for a profit. He also started trading options at 13 through his older brother, who was a stockbroker.
Early on, he tried everything, technical trading, commodities, and fundamental analysis, but none of it gave him a real edge, since there was always someone faster or better at it. What finally worked was using everyday information. He saw that a regular person who pays close attention to what people are buying and talking about can spot a trend early, before it shows up in the stock price. That idea became social arbitrage.
How Chris Invests
Chris does not look at charts and never uses stop losses. As he says, he does not trade price, he trades information. His process is simple:
- He spots a change early, often by reading social media comments for hours each night, especially on TikTok
- He links that change to a company that will be helped or hurt by it
- He checks whether it will really affect that company's sales or reputation, and whether others already know about it
- He buys the stock, or uses options for extra leverage, timed to when the news will spread (often before earnings)
- He exits once the rest of the market figures it out
He is also comfortable when a trade goes against him at first. If the price drops but his reason for the trade is still true, he often sees it as a chance to buy more. Some of his best-known trades came from this approach: buying Mattel before the Barbie movie became a hit, spotting E.L.F. Cosmetics after a viral makeup video, and catching the kids' slime craze through the company that made the glue. He also built TickerTags, a social-data company that sold this kind of insight to hedge funds and correctly called the Brexit result in 2016. Today, a lot of his focus is on the changes coming from AI, robotics, and automation, which he believes will create some of the biggest opportunities of his life.
What Drives Him
Chris believes regular people can beat Wall Street. In his view, big institutions are slow, buried in noise, and tied up in red tape, while everyday investors can spot things faster, look deeper, and act sooner. He runs Dumb Money Live with his partners, where members from all kinds of backgrounds, drivers, dentists, pilots, everyday people, share what they are noticing and work out the best ideas together.
He also teaches a simple money habit he calls a "big money account": keep a separate account just for high-risk, high-reward investing, fund it with extra money from side work, and treat every dollar in it as a future hundred. His bigger goal is to bring as many people as possible into the world of investing, because he is living proof that you do not need a finance degree or a Wall Street job to do well. You just need to be curious, pay attention, and put in the work.
