From Med School to Full-Time Trading

Usman did not plan to become a trader. He was studying medicine in China, and after four years he came home one summer and saw that his younger brother, Umar Ashraf, was already trading and doing well. That got him interested. He left med school, which worried his family, and started trading full time in 2015. In the beginning he made almost every mistake a new trader can make. He lost around $60,000 in his first year, used credit cards to fund his account, and drove Uber in New York City to keep going, trading in the mornings and driving in the afternoons.

He started by trading biotech penny stocks, where he learned breakout trading and how to read the tape, before he moved to options. His big turning point came from an Uber ride. He picked up a Wall Street trader, asked why one of his own trades had lost money, and was told to go and study implied volatility. That one tip changed how he understood options. He studied the details, kept showing up every day, and after about two years of losses he finally became consistent. 

Today he trades full time and teaches through Option Hub, with in-person classes in New York, Miami, and Dubai, and he has taught more than 800 traders.

How Usman Trades

Usman is a day trader and scalper. He trades options on big stocks and indexes, and the S&P 500 (SPX) is his favorite. He keeps a short watchlist, builds it over the weekend, and each morning he checks for news and key price levels on both the up side and the down side, so he is never stuck looking only one way. He reads price action, volume, and level two instead of guessing earnings, and he trades the move after the news, not the bet before it. His biggest trade was on Amazon. He went in with about $130,000 as the stock moved from around $2,700 to $3,300 in about a week, and that turned into close to half a million dollars.

Discipline is the most important part of how he trades:

• He trades smaller after big wins, not just after losses, because he can get overconfident after a few winning days
• He stops trading after two losing trades in a row, and takes the next day off after two losing days
• He starts each year small, builds up some profit first, then slowly trades bigger
• He shows up every day, even on days he does not take a trade

He says his discipline comes from his father, and he is honest that the hardest part of trading for him is controlling himself, not reading the chart.
